چکیده

The acquisition of a foreign phonetic contrast requires the second language (L2) learner to attend to those acoustic dimensions that are informative for the distinction and to manipulate values along those dimensions during production. The discovery of informative dimensions in L2 can be complicated by the contrasts present in the native (L1) language. A well-known example is the difficulty that native Japanese speakers have perceiving or producing the English /l/-/r/ distinction. Here, we attempt to systematically describe this L2 learning task by obtaining distributions of acoustic measures (formant frequencies and durations) from native English productions of word-initial /l/ and /r/. These distributions include inter-speaker (gender), intraspeaker, and phonetic (vowel environment) variance. These results reveal that F3-onset frequency provides almost complete discrimination between the distributions. Distributions of native-Japanese productions of /l/ and /r/ were also collected. The Japanese distributions can be partially separated on F2 and F3 onset frequency. All of these distributions are compared to a distribution of native productions of the Japanese rhotic flap. The flap distribution overlaps the native /r/ and /l/ distributions in F2xF3 space. Further measures of native productions reveal that the flap is contrasted with Japanese /w/ mainly by the onset frequency of F2. Thus, the Japanese productions of /l/ and /r/ appear to be influenced by both the informative variance in L2 distributions (F3) and by the informative variance in distributions of similar L1 categories (F2).

Level of Grammatical Proficiency and Acquisition of Functional Projections: The case of Iranian learners of English language

Unlike Lexical Projections, Functional Projections (Extended Projections) are more of an ‘abstract’ in nature. Therefore, Functional Projections seem to be acquired later than Lexical Projections by the L2 learners. The present study investigates Iranian L2 learners’ acquisition of English Extended Projections taking into account their level of grammatical proficiency. Specifically, the aim is ...

Incorporating Cognitive Linguistic Insights into Classrooms: the Case of Iranian Learners’ Acquisition of If-Clauses

Cognitive linguistics gives the most inclusive, consistent description of how language is organized, used and learned to date. Cognitive linguistics contains a great number of concepts that are useful to second language learners.  If-clauses in English, on the other hand, remain intriguing for foreign language learners to struggle with, due to their intrinsic intricacies. EFL grammar books are ...

Cross-linguistic Validation of Processability Theory: The Case of EFL Iranian Students’ Speaking Skill

Abstract This study investigated the validity of processability theory proposed by Pienemann (1998/2015) among Iranian EFL learners’ oral performance. The theory defines six procedural stages for learners in the process of second language acquisition. In order to conduct the study, 10 intermediate EFL learners were selected based on their performance on Oxford Placement Test. Then, they partici...

Teacher and Learner in Humanistic Language Teaching

Since ‘the development of whole person’ was brought to the focus of attention by humanist psychologists as a central concern in educational theory, affective variables have been assumed to have a significant share in the learning process that goes on in a pedagogical setting. Meanwhile, the process of second language development, because of the very nature of language as a vehicle for communica...
